West Virginia Institute of Technology called Joan C. Browning in 1969 to serve as
marketing director and business development consultant to handicraft cooperative businesses
in southern West Virginia. She stayed and makes her home in the Irish Corner Magisterial District
where she uses her lifetime of experiences to keep getting result for the good of ALL of Greenbrier County.

- Development Director, Greenbrier Community College Foundation, 1993-2005--prepared all publicity and promotional materials; public speaking throughout the Greenbrier Valley and in Charleston; designed and maintained accounting system; wrote grant proposals and reports; monitored construction and funding of Greenbrier Hall renovation. Two greatest accomplishments were (1) completing and paying for the $6 million dollar modernized Greenbrier Hall and campus for the community college-- about 1,000 students each year benefit from having a local community college. And (2) raising almost a million dollars in scholarships for Greenbrier Community College students. More than a hundred students have already received Greenbrier Community College Foundation Scholarships and now at least 36 awards of $36,000 will be made each year in perpetuity. Donated funds to endow the Joan C. Browning Community Service Scholarship
- Recruited the West Virginia University School of Business and Economics "Executive Master's in Business Administration" distance learning program to Lewisburg and to the Greenbrier Community College. About 60 Greenbrier Valley citizens have completed the WVU EMBA degree in Lewisburg.
- Consultant, Marshall University, public relations and student recruiting. Organized master's degree courses in "History of the Virginia Resort Springs" in White Sulphur Springs and "Historiography - History Methods" in Lewisburg
- Concord College, consultant to the President on the new entrepreneurial studies program
- Concord College, Adjunct instructor in Advertising Design & Writing
- West Virginia State College (now University), helped organize Southeastern WV Alumni chapter, represented WVSU at State Fair of West Virginia and Lewisburg's Taste of Our Towns (T.O.O.T.)
- Adjunct instructor, Greenbrier Community College, Contemporary Ethics
- Faculty member, National History Day/Annenberg Corporation for Public Broadcasting seminar for teachers, "Teaching the Civil Rights Movement"

Presented library's needs to Greenbrier County Commission, Lion's Club, Lewisburg Rotary Club, West Virginia Legislature, and many other organizations.

- Greenbrier County Coordinator for Internal Revenue Services Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA). Started the IRS/VITA at all Greenbrier County public libraries and at Greenbrier Community College
